Snowzilla squad suffers setback at City Hall

In: Snowzilla Articles

Consider them Snowzilla’s army.

snowzilladestryedA group of snowman protesters — apparently rallying in support of the towering Anchorage outlaw — appeared on Christmas Day in front of City Hall. They carried signs that read “Snowzilla needs a bailout” and “Snowmen have rights too.”

Snowzilla creator Billy Ray Powers said he had nothing to do with the protest, though he saw the snowmen last night while passing through downtown.

“They’re cute as can be,” he said.

Today the remains of the protesters lay in frozen pieces. Their signs sat in a nearby Dumpster.

City Manager Mike Abbott said the building’s super removed them. Employees at the Kaladi Brothers across the street say it was the security guards.

The city is battling Powers — whom city officials say has long stored junk and ignored land use rules, to the dismay of his Airport Heights neighbors — over whether the giant Snowzilla he builds each year is a safety hazard or good holiday fun.

A small, misshapen snowman protester appeared in front of City Hall earlier this week. Reinforcements arrived Thursday.

As for what happens now, city spokeswoman Jenny Evans said one option is to negotiate a deal with Powers that would allow him to build Snowzilla for a few weeks each year rather than let it stand for months at a time.

City Manager Abbott said, “All of it requires sort of a good-faith effort on Mr. Powers to work with the city, and his neighbors to figure out some way to accommodate what he wants to do, and what’s legally allowed in that area.”

Powers says the city has never tried to work with him before and ought to pass an anti-snowman law if it wants to get rid of Snowzilla.

There will be no negotiations, he said.

Don’t back down, guys. You’ve got the whole country behind you- it’s high time that local governments stopped stepping on the people they’re supposed to serve and represent!

Sounds like the league of extraordinary snowman builders are on Power’s side. Where are all these neighbors that are constantly complaining about Powers?

I’d say the city are just being their normal fascist selves, as cities tend to be. If they can’t charge a fee or a fine, they don’t want it. I’m sure they’d be more than happy to grant Powers a “permit” to build his snowman….as long as he paid whatever fee they want to charge. Then they can fine him for not having a permit.

This just stinks! Every town/city/borough across the USA seems to be bent on ruling with an iron fist against anything that they can’t make a buck from. I’ve also had it up to my eyeballs with “neighbors” & hope that the whining lot surrounding the Powers’ household get their taxes jacked up. I am looking forward to moving where my closest neighbor is at least 5 acres away because I deal with a fascist town & crybaby neigbors too. They are “offended” by everything we do, including but not limited to: “the tomato plants are too large,” “the pond is unsafe for children” (we haven’t any & their brats are on our property, that’s called trespassing!) & my alltime favorite “the birdfeeders attract rats!” (When in fact, it is their multitude of woodpiles with tarps over them that make for rat hotels.) I hope that “Snowzilla” rises like a pheonix from the ashes, but next time has a big, fat fanny made for all of the neighbors to kiss!

P.S. Sarah Palin granted a stay of execution for a Thanksgiving turkey, why couldn’t she save Snowzilla?

Just another fine example of the government protecting us from ourselves.

You know, I am tired of all these whiner’s too! American’s cannot even have fun anymore. We are regulated
and taxed to death. We are letting these commie politicians dictate all facets of our lives. I say let that police state Mayor sue GOD! He is the one who is responsible for the snow! Power is with Snowzilla and the people. It is about time for the second American revolution!!

You know we don’t get snow here, but I have to say that there is no logical reason why people should be crying over what one person does on his property so long as it isn’t endangering anyone’s life or property. So what the guy wants to make a giant snowman, what else would you do with all that snow anyhow? I think it’s great that he and his family actually took the time out to use their imaginations and created something that gives people holiday cheer. If only the rest of the country would follow in this footsteps.

I think this should become a community event. Get the entire community to build an annual “Snowzilla” just like putting up a Christmas tree in the town square. Something like this can bring the community together to celebrate the season. It’s not religious, it is just good will. No fees, no permits needed. We need more good spirit, friendship, good will toward all including snowmen. Maybe make it a contest or a fundraiser fro charity?

Where I live we put up a big decorated tree in the town square, have plenty of snowmen all over town, Santa parade, everything. Bell ringers for charity. All kinds of things and never any permits needed. Even the mayor and city councilors show up!

That’s my 2 cents!
