The mayor should be happy there are visitors coming to see the snowman and spending money in his town. Cheer up mayor scrouge.
Dick Fehr
Nice job in bringing some of the magic of the season back. Tell the city to back off and have fun with it.

Merry Christmas Gigantic Snow Dude!
We love you for what you stand for! Stand tall and proud my beautiful man of snow!

After all of the hype and bs surrounding Sarah Palin, Alaska and Anchorage needs some positive media attention. The neighbors of Billy and the city government of Anchorage need to lighten up and quit being such Scrooge’s! Snowzilla is on private property, so what if there are a few more cars driving by to see him. Holiday displays around the US have the same issues with traffic, but you would think that for a few weeks out of the year that the neighbors and the officals of the city could just enjoy the holiday spirit displayed!
Happy Holidays All!
Martine
If only in Vegas
in Vegas we rarely have snow, but when we do the first thing people do is make snowmen across the valley with what little accumulation we get. We could only wish to have the snow needed to make Snowzilla here in Vegas! As far as safety, this is a 16 foot snowman in the private yard of a taxpayer! I mean really, do you need to file for a permit to put snow in one area of your yard so you can enjoy the rest of your yard? I have seen snow plowed to that height haphazardly in mall parking lots in the Northeast, just so we can exploit the holiday by shopping our way past the true meaning. Get over it. I would build a 40-50 foot one next year! SNOWZILLA ROCKS! i think a group of Alaskans should form a car protest and bottleneck the city hall area just by driving in slow small circles while obeying all traffic rules, what can they do? Nothing! MERRY CHRISTMAS SNOWZILLA! i hope you are stil there when i visit so i can see you in person!
Glenn B.
Just like the city or government to ruin something fun and special for it’s citizens.
Leave Snowzilla alone and find something else to keep busy with. I’m sure there are more pressing issues then a giant snowman that appears once a year.
It’s a blessing that someone can create a work of art that can bring smiles to the faces of children and adults at this time of year.
Leave the man, his family and snowzilla alone.
Perhaps thinks where tax dollars can be better spent.
Merry Christmas to one and all!
Kathy
I hope they put you in jail. How long are you planning on poking the eyes of the local government, hoping to provoke them into a response so that you can show the world how the “man” is “oppressing” you?
John Smith
Ain’t that the coolest thing i’ve ever seen!
keep up the good work and let nobody get you and your good spirit down!!

Great job Billy!
Don’t give up the fight.
You street looks wide enough to fit ten cars side-by-side for cripes sake!
Those idiot city officials obviously have no idea what the word “traffic” means.
Send ‘em here to Boston for a week, we’ll show those clowns some traffic!
And I thought Alaska was the one last refuge where Americans could still be free.
Guess I was wrong.
Anchoragians unite! Vote these jokers out of office!!
CBailey
Considering it’s only a few weeks a year, you’d think that the neighbors and city government could cut the guy some slack instead of complaining about everything.
Talk about scrooges.
Chris Parker
what happens when this guy kills some kid?
Hope he has his insurance premiums paid up. What happens when some little kid, who wants to see it, gets crushed when it collapses? There appear to be no safety precautions taken.
Maybe the city council hasn’t handled it properly, or even taken the correct media approach to not look like monsters, but this guy is threatening lives and property at this point.
And he makes a website asking for donations? Owes the city over $100,000? This guy is a delinquent, and causes every other citizen to pay more taxes and take on his load. 7 kids, I’m sure he supports all of them just like all the fines he owes… sure….
This probably won’t even get posted.
Your city council member
Snowzilla!! What next! Beerzilla during the Superbowl! It’s obivious to me you should be taken out and have the skin stripped off your body with a bull whip by the Chief of Police. Don’t you know its against the ruuuuulllleeess to mess with snow in Alaska. This is completely out of hand.
Jerry
Maybe an army of the friendly giants could ’show up’ on the lawn as well? Just a thought! Greetings and happy holidays from DC
SnowzillaSupporter
It seems that the local officials have too much time on their hands. My suggestion? Go over their heads! Maybe Governor Palin would give Snowzilla a permanent pardon!
Ken Smith
Make more Snowzillas
I think Snowzilla needs to move locations and appear on the lawn of some very unChristmas like council members. Maybe some volunteers could help build multiple Snowzillas all on the same night all over town and see what the councilmembers do then. Who would they fine? I think Snowzilla is great! Keep up the holiday spirit. You’d think the council could find something more important than a giant snowman to complain about.

If you can’t have a snowman in Alaska then where the hell can you have one?
I find it hard to believe that the city government in Anchorage doesn’t have better goals for their time and efforts then to wage a war on a snowman…so, is this a case of the local government having too much funding or not enough brains?
Evelyn
I think it is great what this man is doing to bring joy to people. The city needs to focus on politics and not worry about a snowman. They are getting ridiculous when you can’t do what you want on property you are supposed to own! I do not see a problem with this as far as safety is concerned, just place the orange safety tape across the sidewalk area by the snowman (in case it melts) and that way people are warned of the danger. What can the city say then?
Dawn Rodrigues
I think that Snowzilla is a great morale booster, being that the economy and most peoples spirits are so far in the hole. I think that if your neighbors don’t like it, they should move. I don’t care how long they’ve lived there, times are changing and in our world overrun by the need to be politically correct, we all need a little something to believe in. How about enjoying what Snowzilla represents and brings to the children in that community instead of tearing it down? And Doug, if you almost hit kids that often, maybe you should be walking, not driving.
Heather Ramsey
What happened to our rights and freedom?
It’s very sad to realize that you are not free to do what you please with your private property . Today there are laws preventing people from having and doing what they want with their property.I don’t think that was the ideal our forefathers had in mind when this country was established.

To the City - Get Over It
I am from a smaller community, and it never ceases to amaze me when the powers that be, for lack of a better term, have consistent cranial/rectal inversions.
A snowman in Alaska. Now that should never make the news. However, if you play it right, and make the builder of the snowman public enemy number one, you can get some national attention for your community.
Well, you did it, folks. You got our attention. Now leave the guy and his family alone and get back to fighting crime.
Merry Christmas
Tim
His property. If he wants to put a snowman on it, it’s his right. Who doesn’t like snowpeople? It’s fun and family friendly.
GO SNOWZILLA!
Dan Herbert
Snowzilla Must Live
that’s one good looking snowman you’ve got there! I’d marry him! LOL. I wish the city would lay off you people…you’re just having fun.
Goodangel
Maybe we need to over throw city governments
We face some similar ridiculous ordinances here in the City of Rochester. The NET offices (Neighborhood Empowerment Teams) acted almost like Gestapo agents with property owners. Multiple law suits against the NET program and a change in administration helped to alleviate some of this. We have incredibly high taxes, poor services, and foolish failed projects that have cost tax payers in Rochester, NY tens of millions of dollars. Yet the City of Rochester and City Council act like they own our homes. I think it is time for people of Rochester, Anchorage and other cities to take back the power. Revolution begins at home.
Richard Natoli-Rombach
Just a thought on how this can be solved………..
Is there a city park or open area where SNOWZILLA can be built?????????
Merry Christmas to one and all!
Michelle, San Antonio, TX!
From a retired Deputy Sheriff of Fresno County, CA. Nice job Billy, your bringing joy to people at Christmas obviously disrupts the city scrooges..sad. If I were an officer responding to a complaint of your goodwill, I would direct traffic and wish all a Merry Christmas.
GT, Fresno, CA
Get rid of everyone on that city council board. They’re absolute morons wasting taxpayer money. Long live Snowzilla and our freedoms as Americans.
Joel
What a great snowman!! If Snowzilla brings a smile to the faces of adults and children what is the big deal, its for a few months and hes great to look at, its no cost to anyone but Mr. Powers which is ridiculous, its a fun holiday tradition that should live on forever!! the city officials need to get over themselves and focus on more important things then a snowman built out of holiday spirit, I guess they have nothing else better to do..Snowzilla forever!!
N
I would think the city managers would capitalize on the publicity to their advantage. The people who come to see the snowman will be buying gas, food and maybe lodging. Why dont they improve your road and use you as a tourist attraction? Government, oyi, so much imposed power, so little imagination. This might help, put an imprint of the Virgin Mary on the snowman and people will come from all around. How knows the Catholic Church might even protect you.
Mary Doerges
How about a Cease and Desist order on those bureauRATS? I love your snowman! Traffic problems exist everywhere where I live. We just deal with it!!! MERRY CHRISTMAS!
Linda
Anchorage snowlovers UNITE!
I hope everyone in Anchorage builds HUGE snowmen in their yards. Laws that don’t make sense, or serve the people are meant to be changed, and this one makes zero sense. My husband and I used to live on a VERY quiet street in Utah years ago, and he used to build the most amazing colored snow dragons and castles in our yard. Everyone loved them, including our neighbors, who, unlike these folks, apparently, had nothing to hide, and didn’t mind a little extra traffic on our tiny street. People would pull up, even late at night, shine their car lights on the critters, and take pictures. SO WHAT?!?!?!?
The fun and sense of light-heartedness that Billy displays is encouraging. His stodgy, boring neighbors need to go hand out dinners at the homeless shelters, and appreciate that they are not cold and alone. Find something productive to do with the energy they waste trying to squelch Billys’ sense of humor and fun. You GO Billy! (And the secret snow elves!)
Leslie H
Go Snowzilla! You ROCK!
Obiviously, the city officials in Anchorage have NOTHING better to do than flog some citizen who has the energy to make something mirthful during the holidays. What MORONS!
I lived in Anchorage in ‘94. How about the city officials concentrating their energies in making Anchorage ATTRACTIVE. I support one author who said it is a city “…without color or class”. Everyone I’ve talked to mention going outside Anchorage to see the real Alaska.
Now they outlaw snowmen. Morons!
Al Brashear
LET THE SNOWMAN LIVE!!!!!!
Jason
I support this snowman, in a time of economic and sadness around the world for so many reason its a great icon to help with the Christmas spirit. I would be more then happy to have one in my front yard! Anchorage should be ASHAMED to even consider actions against this festive snowman. At this rate I’m surprised they just did say it was sexiest since there was no snow women. Great stuff Billy!
Christopher, Guelph, Ontario
Boo Anchorage, Yay Snowzilla !
Way to go Anchorage ! In this time of rampant unemployment, financial uncertainty, ongoing war and global recession, issuing a cease and desist order against a neighborhood building a giant snowman is a great way to show your community support this bleak holiday season. I hope Santa brings you a lump of coal for Christmas, loser. Viva Snowzilla!
Daren
Does the city need cash that badly?
This seems like a lynching from times past. Leave this man and his kids alone, the city is being ridiculous about this entire situation. From the picture I saw on this website there didn’t seem to be a problem, a snowman? Please!
Mdkocon
Snowzilla is Awesome
Mr Powers has the supoort of my family in Southwest Florida. that snowman is just awsome keep up the good fight .
Russell
I live in illinois and that snowman put a smile on my face this christmas eve. I think the mayor and people complaining about a snowman need to have what ever is stuck up their butts removed..I also think with the publicity of this snow man that could bring visitors and revenue to alaska..Some people travel great distances to see something that makes them smile
Kimm
I HOPE YOUR SNOWZILLA GROWS AND GROWS TO BE MORE THAN YOUR LOCAL OFFICAL CAN EVER APPRECIATE - KEEP UP THE SNOWMAN “RIGHTS”!!! BEEN BUILDING SNOWMEN FOR 52 YRS AND HOPE TO BUILD MANY MANY MORE WITH MY GRANDCHILDREN -
Cindy in PA
Hey Billy,
I used to live in anchorage and think its a load of moose pellets that the city has nothing better to do than harrass a snowman why dont they go after a child molester or some other real criminal and leave snowzilla alone!!! Sorry I have no donation except my support but I hope he keeps coming back year after year!!!! Have a merry christmas from us in washington!!! GO SNOWZILLA!!!
Chuck Davis, cgdavis1965@hotmail.com
Problems with Snowzilla
I was reading the article regarding the issues the mayor has with your giant snowman. It really is a simple problem to solve…….all they have to do is setup a designated parking area and have the people walk to view the santa! You could think they would be happy to see some community spirit. It’s no different here when people put up lots of lights and it brings traffic into a neighborhood….honestly it’s a temporary issue and filled with fun and happiness. Keep it up!
Kim Kutzer
Snowzilla is very cool !
Being from Nothern Michigan I have enjoyed the snow alot and miss it very much. my Job has moved my family to southwest Florida. (and as you could imagine thiers no snow here ) I would love for children to be able to make a snowman of that size .the last sonwman we made was at least 8 ft tall 5 years ago. shame on that local government dont tear it down . dont be a bucnh of scrooges . poast a sign only a few cars at a time or park your cars a short distance away and walk to see it.
Me and my children support SNOWZILLA ALL THE WAY FROM fLORIDA . GOOD LUCK MR Powers
Russell
I love giant snowmen
Kids, adults, everybody loves snowmen. It is unbelieveable to see this city is having a problem with Snowzilla.
Jim
I think your snowman is wonderful!!! It is absolutely beautiful from the pictures that I have seen! I think that your town should leave you alone! It is wonderful that children get to see such a HUGE snowman!!! Keep doing what you are doing!!!!

Long Live the Snowman
For a few months Snowzilla graces the town of Anchorage. This small town in Ontario, Canada embraces it all year long. http://www.bigthings.ca/ontario/beardmore.html
Merry Christmas all and a happy new year!
Michael Carroll
Just a quick email to say, you hang in there. I think it is so funny that you are doing this. I know you say it is a miracle, but don’t let this stop. My family and I live in Louisiana and we don’t get to see snow but about 1 time every 3 years if then and love to see and hear about things like this. I will hope the legal system gets off your back. From all of us in the south, if you can, please keep it going and give us something to enjoy and wish for. God Bless, hope you and yours have a Very Blessed Merry Christmas.

Christmas time is about love, joy, and family. If any child in America gets a smile on their face because of Snowzilla then you’ve made a huge accomplishment. Its about the love of Christmas. Its hard to believe that officals want to tear down a snowman, no matter what size. There’s more to worry about than a big pile of snow! Continue doing what you love and don’t let those Grinches get in your way. Long Live Snowzilla!
Brittany
I recommend the Anchorage City Council move to have everyone placed in cages where they can be fed and monitored and hooked up to IV antibiotics so NOTHING EVER BAD HAPPENS TO THEM EVER.
WHAT DO YOU MEAN YOU DON’T LIKE BEING LOCKED IN A CAGE? YOU’RE SAFER THERE.
Phil Dunham
Go Snowman
Thank you for the wonderful snowman! Keep fighting and being a great American! All of the snowmen in my house have to live inside- how great to see Snowzilla in his natural environment!
Snowman Lover in North Carolina
I bet these city officials spend other tax dollars looking for ways to increase tourism and/or promote community events. Why don’t they come out of their offices and take this wonderful opportunity to begin an annual snowman festival.

MERRY CHRISTMAS!!!!!! I hope & pray that the mysterious builder keeps up this wonderful tradition to spread wonder & joy to the pepole of Anchorage, Alaska. Snow & wonder only last for so long-traffic patterns can wait.

Where is the love?
This is to those who think his roof is an endangerment to his childrens safety. What happened to the day when neighbours would rally around and help one in need. If he needs a new roof, could you all not get together and build him one instead of complaining? The mayor could take the initiative and show the true spirit of Christmas. It’s called Love.
Beverly Stirling
I think it is completely unfair that the mayor’s office is singling you out. I mean, do they stop people from putting on outrageous light displays? They get just as much additional traffic and may be even more dangerous when you consider the risk of electrical fire and electrocution.
Absolutely ridiculous to rain on your parade!
Daniel Hill
In cases like this it seems to me that the city goes to great lengths to shut such displays down because they aren’t earning any money off of it. If city hall were to regulate traffic, take “donations” and sell hot cocoa or something to visitors, they would be all about Snowzilla and singing his praises. Mind you, if that were done, the whole spirit of Snowzilla would be killed, because, to my knowledge, Mr. Powers didn’t build Snowzilla with the intent to turn a profit, but simply to have fun and spread some cheer!
One can hope that city hall will change it’s mind (doubtful). Perhaps there is a good lawyer who wants to do some pro bono work for Snowzilla.
Jessica
This is great,—-and what a great Dad!
Of all the things that have been, and are being taken away from us every day, this is wonderful!
Don’t let them push you around!
Merry Christmas & Happy New Year!
p.s. Notice I didn’t say “Happy Holidays”!!!
Deborah Jones
Billy, Congratulations on your Christmas Spirit! Any chance of a picture of the Governor standing near Snowzilla holding her shotgun?
Good luck sir, all the best!
Tim
1st off MERRY CRISTMAS. now!!! i feel soory for your neighbors because they can’t find the holidays warmth to imbrace the season they should be proud to have a neibor such as yourself who wants to bring joy to you town during this time of year.. since it seems that everyone could use a little brightness to help lift them out of there depression with the losing of jobs and homes at least you are tring to help bring people up insted of holding them down.. as for you leagle issues tell them politely to have a cup of cheer and enjoy the season because it seems that this is the only time of the year people realy love one another and you just spreding your love around and makig holiday smiles…
Brian Reinhart, Elkhart, IN
I just wanted to say that even from LaGrange, KY… you have supporters that support you! I hope all goes well and that you can keep the tradition of Snowzilla alive! I have no clue why anyone would be against a giant snowman that brings a smile to everyone’s face! Good luck with all of your efforts!
MERRY CHRISTMAS!!!
Kelly Woods
Wow!! Snowzilla is great! I wish we could get a lot of snow so I could build my own Snowzilla. Maybe one day I can get to Alaska and I will be able to see Snowzilla in person.
Sharon, Alabama
Seeing as how Snowzilla seems to be developing into a community project, what about everybody who wants to build him getting together in a public park to build him, make him a town tradition, build a little temporary fence around him to keep people from getting too close in case he should fall, but close enough to make for great photos. He could be built far enough back from the road that people don’t need to worry about his head rolling off and throwing a several hundred pound chunk of ice on the roof of a car, also around a park is likely to have better parking available than a side street in a residential neighborhood. He’s non denominational, so the church and state thing should not be an issue here, ya gotta get the snow off the roads anyway, so why not push into a park and let the residents get busy, with Mr. Powers as the head snow shaper?
As a former resident of New Hampshire, I am well aware of the annoyance of increased traffic in the neighborhood due to the yearly pilgrimage of “Leaf Peepers”, but there are also a few other things that I am aware of as well, and that the munies need to be aware of. If it is Leaf Peepers, or hunters stalking the elusive Snowzilla, they bring annoyance by blocking traffic, but they also bring $$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$ lots of it, they get gas at your pumps, they eat at your cafes, buy disposable cameras at your drug store, and may also very well be stopping to do holiday shopping on the way out of town. I don’t know about Alaska, but most of the country is in a deep recession right now, if you guys don’t need the jobs, cash, and tax dollars the tourists would bring to your town, well bully for you, but the rest of us are knee deep in kimchee and would love an opportunity to make a few extra bucks this year, instead of trying to demolish him, you should embrace Snowzilla and make him a town mascot and destination for winter tourists. Rock on Snowzilla!
Moon
WOW! That is the most wonderful thing I’ve seen all year, Kids playing and enjoying the snowman. Keep it up fight the Humbugs! Keep the spirit of Christmas alive!
John
What happend to freedom?
The United States of America is suppose to be the free land. Foreigners everywhere look at America as a place to go and have a second chance in life because of the opportunities and freedoms. So much for that, I guess this is just another example of how the Gov’t talks a lot of BS when they need good PR but really are controlling, red tape loving, grumpy, nearly communist, power hungry fools.
Sad to say the best way to save Godzilla, festive family fun and the freedom of rights is for Alaska to be come part of a truly free country like CANADA.
Robert
I think that Palin should pardon Snowzilla and let him live. I would love to see the ordinance that says you can’t build a snowman in your front yard.
Dave
Mayor’s Office
This is the last straw! government officials think they dont have to answer to citizens anymore…please scroll down to find the link to the mayors website and write in your comments…long live our rights, especially to build snowmen at Christmastime!
Let the Mayor’s office know what you think. After his interview with KTUU, channel 2, consider insisting that Mike Abbott,Municipal Manager, be removed from his office.

“…Hey, Mikey- show us the specifics! Using “generic” phrases and regulations isn’t acceptable. How about if we (the people) come and see how compliant your property is under the same rules! You are a public nuisance! You want to live in California? Go home!
Thank God that someone(s) “defied” the government, long time ago, in Boston. This may not be a “Tea Party”, but we (the people) have to push the government back out of our lives and property! Go Billy! by Carl…”
Cindy
Why all the fuss about a fun & unique way to celebrate the season ? What better way to brighten a long cold winter for these residents !
I would like to see Snowzilla on the next election ballots to see how many votes are taken away from the stuffy, overpaid lawmakers and politicians.
Cheers !
Dave
WOW! What a great thing to do for the kids!
YOUR SNOWZILLA IS WONDERFUL!
OUR GOVERNMENT IN ALL ITS FORMS IS DEPLORABLE.
What our people need to do is take our country back from big government. But, that’s another matter.
Merry Xmas to you and your children! These holidays are a hardship for many this year…thanks to your efforts…you will bring many smiles!!
Sam
Delightful! If I lived on this block, or in his neighborhood, I’d be building a snowman too! Everyone in the city should go out and build snowmen…find that child in you!!!
Lily, TX
Wow! Can’t believe a snowman is causing such a stir. Let’s just rejoice in the happiness he creates.
Everything gets so overblown these days, that we forgoet about true joys… like the magic of the holidays, and the sweet smiles on children’s faces.
If we can’t find Peace over a snowman… our sad world has no chance.
HAPPY HOLIDAYS EVERYONE!
I love Snowzilla… the FRIENDLY GENTLE GIANT.
Jennifer
Any idea that lights up a child’s face is worth having. Do the city officials not smile when they look at Snowzilla’s face. I live in Winnipeg and when I saw the article and clicked on the link I loved seeing it.
Lighten up City Councillor’s and get with joy of christmas. After all, you live in Alaska where there is snow and some people like having fun with snow. If we could wouldn’t we all like to live in Florida where it is warm.
Season’s Greetings
Wendy
I Love Your Snowzilla
This just made my day on Christmas Eve! I love Snowzilla - he’s awesome! I can’t wait to get home and show my kids.
The freedom to build a gigantic snowman in your front yard - that’s what America is all about! Merry Christmas!
Crissy in Delaware
Snowzilla must never die!
Typical administration meddling in things that make the peasants HAPPY. Keep Snowzilla alive Billy, don’t give in to these whiny jerks.
America has had enough of being treated like a bunch of children while those in power take away every single thing we enjoy because “someone might get hurt”…it’s a freaking snowman for crying out loud!
After the freaking BANNER year of Americans being ripped off and treated like trash I think it’s high time to have a little fun. Snowzilla must live on! Kudos to you and your fun loving children for doing all the work in creating Snowzilla, I’m sure it caused some sore muscles, but I bet you had a blast!
Oh, and most important of all…Merry Christmas!
Lori
Snowzilla never hurt anybody!
Andy
I just want you to know that I do not find anything wrong with what you are doing. When someone with the “Bah-Hum Bug” visits, wish them a Merry Christmas and send them on their way!
I think you share the simplest of joys during this trying time. More power to you. Spread the goodness of Christmas. I got a smile on my face. It brought back wonderful memories of snowman building back in NY.
Merry Christmas to you!! And also to Snowzilla!
Dee
Snowzilla is awesome…It is sad that the “nanny state” mentality has reached its tentacles as far north as Alaska.Keep building!!!!!

Long live Snowzilla and the spirit of Snowzilla as a gas, liquid or solid!

Lighten up Alaska!
Something beautiful has been created in Billy Powers yard. Surely in this day and age of recession and gloom we can all just step back and recognize the happiness and joy that something as simple as a snowman can bring to so many people.
God bless you and your family Billy Powers and thank you for making me smile all the way in central Pennsylvania.
Rusty Smith
How sad those city officials have so little to do but focus negatively on what obviously brings cheer to so many children! They could funnel their negative energy and utilize the attraction Snowzilla brings into something positive for the city. I feel sorry for the residents of Ankorage to have such small-minded officials who are wasting their taxpayers’ money.
Deb, Cleveland, OH
Keep it up guys I still think its great.

Thank you for being an American. Thank you for your Christmas cheer. Thank you for demonstrating your true liberty and freedom. Your city council is the very thing that this country went to war over… with Britian. We live in a Republic, not a democracy. Check out the Constitution (Art 4 Sect 4). Keep being free. And don’t let the King get you down. Government has no spirit of Christmas, outside the Spirit of collecting money, that is.
We have the right to be free (on our own property). And the demonstration of a Right, cannot be construed as a criminal act. Also, all those ordinances and statutes and zonings and codes are all unconstitutional - created by a corporation and enforced by their corporate minions.
MERRY CHRISTMAS!

Another case of government sticking their noses into our business.
During the Christmas season in my area, people drive around neighborhoods and look at the decorations and some streets have street parties as well. It gets congested with traffic but it is only for a couple of weeks.

what a P R campaign!
to all the neighbors-try lending a hand instead of just pointing fingers.
traffic in alaska? set up a stand and sell snow cones! dont eat the yellow snow!
Jesse
Since when is building snowmen illegal? He’s cute! I love snowmen. It is a very sad world we live in when it becomes illegal to build a snowman on your own property. Anchorage city government surely has more important work to do, then to cite someone with fines for building a snowman! How ridiculous our law makers have become. I’m glad I don’t live in Anchorage.
Marme
LOL. I think he’s GREAT - he puts a smile on
faces young and old. Can’t the uncooperative neighbors just give snowzilla a break - I know traffic can be difficult but Christmas is a time for giving and these folks are giving the community a really LARGE gift to be enjoyed by all. A little patience from the neighbors would be appreciated. God bless you all and Merry Christmas - hope to see snowzilla for many years to come!

Why Fight …. When you can build more?
Alright people this is it. Yes, traffic is bad, get used to it. Yes, it might fall, oh well don’t stand next to it. If you can’t live with it don’t. All the bad comments about it are horrible. Most of these people have never even see it. I personally love it and think it is a great community building project. I’ve lived in Alaska for 20 years and Snowzilla is all about Alaska. Yes we could build it somewhere else but who would want to take the time to drive somewhere else to build a snowman when they can do it in their front yard. I would personally love to see about 30+ more of these pop up around town. Good luck stopping them all Municipality of Anchorage. I’ll be looking for a spot very soon to start building my own hopefully Anchorage can help out with this plan. Start Building People!!!!!

Dear Billy, I called the Mayor’s Office today and spoke with a very beleagered press individual by the name of Mark (or was it Matt?) -He’s on their list of workers on their website. He said he had been beseiged by calls and I could tell that he was sympathetic. I told him that SnowZilla, as an entity, deserved to be represented by their very own Ombudsman, per their own description. I further relayed that that was the ONLY way to save themselves politically, as this was the stupidest thing I have ever seen and that it was the cherry on the many tiered cake of stupidity that hailed through America’s 2008. He said he would relay that idea to the mayor and I said if I didn’t see SnowZilla being respectfully represented by their very own Ombudsman, I would call again to make sure they understood my original request. So, Billy, go to their silly Anchorage City Hall website and read up on the description of who gets an Ombudsman and Why! SnowZilla fits their description and if I was in your shoes, I would request their services immediately by certified post. I would cc this request to the local papers and media and to the heads of the local community as well as to FOX news. SnowZilla is an entity and therefore, completely deserving of being elevated to humane recognition. God, it makes you think you’re in the Wizard of Oz, rather than in a Winter Wonderland, but needless to say, have a Merry, Merry Christmas and a Happy New Year!
Warmest Regards,
Elizabeth
I was so happy to see Snowzilla back up again. When everything is so bleak in this world nowadays, we need a good laugh. SZ put a smile back on my face in Seattle. The city scrooges need to lay off Mr. Powers and his snow man. After all this is the Christmas season. Bah Humbug to city officials.
Sarah Ringstad
Brings familys and friends together.
Did anyone ever think to call the Muni and have them come plow the streets and remove the excess snow? This would have at least eased some of the problems.
Children love to take their picture with Snowzilla. In fact, it gets them off their butts.
Families are spending time together, friends are making memorable moments and it brings the christmas or holiday spirit to everyone who has seen it or heard about it.

Lets see TOOOOOO much traffic in anchorage You live in THE BIGGEST CITY IN ALASKA if you dont like the traffic move. I hear KAKE Alaska, has some Homes for Sale and they dont have many roads or vehicles. Let the kids BUILD THERE SNOWMAN. What is the snowman going to do to you. it is people like you that are taking the Christ out of Christmas, next you are going to say all kids must give up there sleds and toys. I say MERRY CHRISTMAS and let him build the snowman. tell the stupid people to park there cars if they dont like the traffic
Matthew Lay
Bye bye snowzilla.
Someone needs to bring out an equally giant, mobile, gas powered space heater to melt this puppy down in the middle of the night.
Heywood Jablome
Place blame where it needs to.
What I don’t understand is they will make a map of places to see Christmas lights on peoples houses and this causes traffic where normally there is none. Then you have a snowman and people are getting the city involved. The same city organization that puts maps out as to where you can go to sight see for the holidays. As for Children in the streets??? Where the heck are the parents of the children because those are the ones who you should be placing the blame. I wouldn’t just let my kids play in the street.
Jessie
SNOWMAN MANIA - DEFY THE MUNI!!
“EVERY house in Anchorage needs to build a SUPER HUGE snowman in their front yard…. REALLY give the Muni something to fuss about.
Have a ‘Who can make the biggest snowman’ contest each winter and tie it in with Fur Rondy snow sculpture contest.
Just DON’T let the Muni RUIN all your outside winter fun!
Good grief… you can’t build a snowman in your own front/back yard!!!
Do I see an Ordinance coming? NOOOOOOO!!!!!
Kids get away from the TV and go make snowmen!!! PLEASE!!!
Lynnda J Edwards
He ain’t heavy! He’s my brother!

Aren’t these public officials elected in Anchorage? I don’t know about you guys but where I am from, if an elected official abuses his/her power he doesn’t get re-elected. And if it is a strong abuse of power, his position gets recalled.
As far as complaining neighbors. Most stop complaining if you keep an eye on everything they do and start complaining about them. Believe that not only will the city get tired of dealing with it but the person(s) doing the complianing will stop because they feel just as harrassed as many people feel Mr. Powers is being harrassed.
All this being said. Maybe there wouldn’t be such an issue around Christmas if he would clean up his property for the rest of the year?
Kimberly
I just wanna know what next?
We can’t say “Merry Christmas”, we have to say “Happy Holidays”.
Cities can’t put up any kind of holiday displays due to separation of religion from government.
Now, city government is gonna tell us we can’t build snowmen in our yards? WTF?!
If the problem is children running to see it, maybe parents need to teach and supervise children.
If the problem is drunk ppl wandering the streets, making noise, venturing to see it, then maybe they should police the neighborhood and write them ppl up for public intoxication and/or disturbing the peace after hours.
There’s a difference between Government and Laws and plain out stripping away freedoms and dictating our lives.
Just my 2 Cents worth from Michigan (and yes, we have snow here)
Heather
I agree that anyone who states that a snowman, which clearly is not a road hazard, is deemed “dangerous” and must be brought down immediately should be called an Ebinezer Scrooge! This is a time of year when we should all get together to celebrate life! Not the nonsense about destroying a snowman! If someone were to get hurt, God forbid, doesn’t the property owner have the legal obligation to pay for the liability? Let’s worry more about important things Anchorage like crime! Get over it and stop acting like a bunch of whiners!!!
Mike Sleeth
What would the founding fathers do?
Unbelievable! I never thought I would see the day that someone is not allowed to build a snowman on there own property. So much for having real property ownership rights.
Greg Berglund
Wow, ever consider offering to help clean it up? Or is it just something to complain about? We had a neighbor who had a horrible yard. Turned out people just kept giving him things and he didn’t have the heart to tell them no thanks and it got added to his piles. Finally the neighborhood got together with the church and we got his yard cleaned up in a weekend and he has been very diligent it keeping it so ever since!
Complains get the city involved……solutions get the people involved…if they care.
M. Gill
Snowzilla is a non-commercial way that this man celebrates his holidays. With everything being so commercial and unfeeling now-a-days by getting rid of Snowzilla they are ruining holiday spirit!
I feel like the government is desensitizing us from our holiday joys because of there buh humbug ways. Saving Snowzilla is protecting our feelings! Save Snowzilla to save the meaning of the holidays! together they made it, together they enjoyed it. Snowzilla live on!
Trish
I just have to say that I wish that Southern California had enough snow to do somthing like this. I think it’s wonderfull keep up the good work!
As for the city and the people who don’t like it “May Santa’s Deer poop in your stockings!”
Your Friend,
Mary Kuko, Ontario Ca
Alaska is the last frontier !!!! I have been proud to be your guest many times in your great state. Gold and the Iditarod has brought me back many times ! How can one person have so much power with trivial complaints !!!! I would get a “Recall election” drive started, and see how the elected officials like the sound of that ! Just the rumor of it would make them think of how stupid and wasteful their actions are !
Doesnt the code man have a few loose manhole covers to check up on ? Wonder if he has Christmas lights on his house that are too bright, and causing a”Traffic Hazard” If so, Make a call, see how long it takes for it to get checked out ! Alaska is a “BIG STATE”, so it needs a “BIG SNOWZILLA” !!!!! So in the spirit of the season, KEEP IT UP !!!! People need to be reminded this is a celebration of the season of giving, So the city needs to ” GIVE IT UP !!!!” I tip my hat to Billy Powers !!!! for a job well done !
M. S. Finlay, Alabama
I think it is shameful that the neighbors dont enter into a community spirit at christmas to help build and enjoy snowzilla. It is something for the town to celebrate and help to put them on the map every year. Good luck and long live snowzilla!
Peter Turner
YA! We’ll MAKE IT!
…there is hope after all!!!
Harold B.
wut u guys did is awsome, way to kick “the man” in ass. i wish our town did somthing like this. it has to be a bitch to get the head on, and do the face. but congrats. its pretty awsome.

Politically Correctness Run Amok. I have wanted to move back to Anchorage ever since I moved to California. But from the news reports, it seems that I may as well stay down here in the land of “Fruits and Nuts” since it sounds as if they are now running things up there as well.
It is really sad to find that “Political Correctness” is now running amok in the Great State of Alaska.
Mike Martin
Dear Mr. Powers, in the interest of all I would clean up your front yard throughout the year and take care of your court fees. Then at Christmas even if a few complain, the courts will be more leniant with you as you are being responsible year round. Also, during the time of your holiday snowzilla you could bake a holiday basket for each neighbor on your block, even the bah hunbugs and you may bring them the Christmas spirit and melt a few hearts. It’s a wonderful tradition - keep it up! Good luck and Happy Holidays!
Jasmine, Texas
Snowzilla, may just very be the last symbol of hope for Christmas. Governments now want everyone immune to any sort of pleasant experience.
They declare it unsafe. Give me a break, as if this is some sort of avalanche that can kill someone.
For those people that live by this wonderful winter sight and choose to complain, move somewhere else!
Whatever happened to making things that brings a smile to a little child?
I applaud those for making snowzilla overnight!
Mikhail Pulle
haha the snowzilla things are AWESOME! I totally support ![]()
Kim
The enduring image of the holiday spirit. In Snowzilla I trust.
Jon
Who else thinks that the great governor of Alaska and former VP hopeful should pardon Snowzilla? Save him from his death sentence, he was framed I say! Long live Snowzilla!
Kyle McCloud
HOORAY FOR SNOWZILLA! Civil disobedience is the best form of protest and was practiced by Gandhi, Martin Luther King, and now you! Good job and you have our support down south in Ohio.
Ariari
Hmmmm…that is one monster snowman! Well, I am impressed. I read the story about the complaints and the city trying to force Snowzilla to be destroyed. Here is the thing….if most of the neighbors are fine with it, and this is not danger to the community, then okay..keep the snowman up. In fact, have all of the residents in this neighborhood to sign a petition or contract saying that they are perfectly fine with it, but the contract will also say that “if” anything negative happens to them or their property due to the heavy foot or car traffic coming in to see Snowzilla….then they give up “all rights” to complain and no one will pay for anything of their own to be repaired or replaced…if their own property has been damaged in any way. This will not be the responsibility of those who actually did the damage (like if there is some freak accident due to the heavier traffic, or if a drunk decides to go looney on someone’s yard)…because those who signed the contract gave an open invitation for all to view the snowman….and the residents were warned by the city that Snowzilla could be a hazard. For the residents who are against the snowman…they should sign a contract too, which states they are against it, and if anything negative happens to them or their property due to the increase in traffic, then all responsibility will be on the owner of Snowzilla, and whomever built the snowman, and all those who signed the contract protesting Snowzilla’s destruction..and all of them will have to chip in and pay damages and give a public apology in letter form or in person to those who warned them that it was not a good idea. Okay..now everybody play nice..and if anything bad happens, well, get out your cheque books.
Christi
I think that poster “Doug” who lives down the street needs to slow down while he’s driving on a residential street…why is he almost “hitting kids?” He needs a few speeding tickets. What a Grinch!
Terry
Snowzilla - 1 / City Hall - 0.
We The People Have Spoken!!!
Does this man own his land?
Jess
what is wrong with america nowadays? why cant us kids make snowmans?is it ILLEGAL??!! america is starting to make bad decisions and will make even more with obbama as president in ‘09.
Myyung
I just found out about this whole fiasco, and i don’t think that the satus of a man’s yard should judge whether or not he can be allowed to spread Christmas Cheer.
I think he’s doing a wonderful thing and kudos to the people who re-built him.
Andrew J. Copeland
Hey man, i think what you did is great. I’m from Arizona and dont see things like this usually so i love it. Building a snowman should NOT be aginaist the law. Thats what christmas is about and plus you live in Alaska. The whole government in Alaska are just acting like asses. If you own a house i think you should be able to build anything you want on the property. Anyways i love what your doing. Merry Christmas from AZ ![]()
Erik
BAH HUMBUG!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Let Snowzilla stay strong!!!!!!!!!!!
Does this mean Christmas is soon to be banned
Hope not
That would be unfortunate
Colin Harper
Really…a hazard? It could fall over and kill someone? How many years has he been doing this? And how many people have been injured? If your that worried then set up a caution tape x amount of feet away from it.
And if traffic is a concern then have an article or news clip done stating visiting hours. And if there is a light on it then turn it off during late hours to discourage folks from showing up so late.
Don’t take away such a fun activity for the kids. If they arn’t out making this snowman then where will they be? Sitting on their butts watching TV? “Hanging” out at the mall?
Lighten up!
Jennifer
I lived in Alaska for 15 years and I have never seen a snowman so big before. I think that Snowzilla is REALLY COOL and should continue to be a tradition in Anchorage. I wish I still lived there so that I could see Snowzilla in person.
Charmaine P
I fully support your cause. I can’t believe that the city would order such a thing. And then after all California said it’s “OK” to sue a good Samaritan. What have we come to? I say build MR & MRS SnowZilla, maybe even give them some kids.
If they are so concerned about traffic, why don’t the fix the cluster f&^K that is known as downtown, and by Diamond Street. Really it sounds like someone got picked on a lot in school and is afraid of snowballs.
Adam A
Snowzilla looks freaking awesome. If billy Powers wants to amass that large amount of snow on his property in order to construct a Snow big man, then he sure as heck should be allowed to. I say let him keep the snow man and let it be larger next year.
Alex
Good job, all who helped build Snowzilla this year. I say spend all this coming year brainstorming ideas of other gigantic things that can be built and displayed for Christmas in years to come. Make the neighbors have to complain every year. The ordinance, though I don’t know the exact wording, seems ridiculous. Another option would be to encourage visitors to visit during other times of the year to view simple things like the best manicured lawn, Snowzilla’s grave, etc. Anything would work. Keep up the good work and holiday cheer. Bah, humbug to those who complain–they’re the real monsters!
Charlie
Let the Mayor’s office know what you think. After his interview with KTUU, channel 2, consider insisting that Mike Abbott,Municipal Manager, be removed from his office.
http://www.ci.anchorage.ak.us/Feedback/mayorfeed.html Hey, Mikey- show us the specifics!
Go Billy!
Carl
What is the world coming to when a person can’t build a snowman in his own back yard without the government raining on his parade? Since when does the city have the right to tell someone what they can and can’t do on their own private property? All the rapists, child molesters, and murderers roaming the streets and the law is worrying about a SNOWMAN?! They need to get a life! Kudos to the people who rebuilt the snowman! Long live Snowzilla!
Bizzygal
The Cost of Freedom: We should be free to build Gaint Snowmen. We should be free from persons who hate Snowmen. We have freedom to enjoy to things that bring joy this time of year. How long will Snowzilla live with freedom? Well not from the Sun.
John
I think snowzilla is wonderful. I’m glad I don’t get enough snow to make one in Jersey. I remember how much my kids loved to make snowmen when they were little. LONG LIVE SNOWZILLA
Jen
Government needs to step back on this. The reason there is so much traffic is because the people LIKE christmas displays.
BOO-HISS to “code enforcement”!
Mark Hall
LIVE LONG SNOWZILLA!!!!!!!!!!!!
George
