Just wanted to say how much I enjoyed your monumental snowman! It seems as if you have much community support. If the city continues to play Scrooge, perhaps next year you and your family could build a snowzilla in a city park and invite other families to join in the fun. It might even become an annual tradition.
Thanks for putting a smile on face.
Frosty Wilson
WOW, I wish we HAD as much snow here in Holland to built such a snowman!!!
It looks awsome!!!
Linda
This is way cool!!
With everything going on in our world today-this is such a refreshing diversion!
This snowman put a smile on the faces of us here in Georgia.
Just can’t understand why there is such an uproar by what appears to be a select few with the power to cause trouble, Hope they’re able to lighten up a bit. I never did care much for people determined to be so negative and vengeful. Sounds like this group might need to focus on being kind to their neighbor and cut the bullying-Really people.
Thanks for the wonderful snowman ya’all.
Marcia
Hopefully, you can continue your tradition. Sounds like fun, trying to get out there and build it and everything. It is to bad you can’t use a big field to build the next one, can you imagine the size of the snowman if you have more room to build him.
We live in Florida, and have moved from Idaho, where there was always more than enough snow. unfortunately, there is no snow here. So seeing your snowman was great!
Good luck,, and Good work.
Linda Henderson Did the people of Anchorage vote in Scrooge for Mayor? Gimme a break.. Just the Picture made my 4 yr old say “WOW” and smile ear to ear.. And we are thousands of miles away in Minnesota…
Thanks alot
Merry Xmas AND Happy holidays Shawn Higginbotham
To the city council, you should be ashamed..and BTW, Good luck in your next election..
It’s time the corruption in Alaska becomes the greater issue of public nuisance…leave Snowzilla be…it’s Christmas, and doesn’t hurt anyone…get a grip, please…let Billy Powers do what he does for the kids…i think it’s a nice thing, that he does…why waste taxpayers money, on legalities?…you should be ashamed of yourselves
Mike Manhoff
Just wanted to send my respect to Snowzilla and the Powers. I live in Edmonton, Alberta, a place not unfamiliar to snow, and I have never seen anything like Snowzilla. Its brilliant, its joyous, and man that hat is HUGE! Happy Holidays, and best wishes for years to come.
Cheers,
Jon Mann You may know that the town of Bethel, Maine constructed a “Snow Woman” 122 feet tall, in a field. They were proud of it. A mere 16 footer in Alaska does not seem to match your mountains. Art Judson
Greetings from Springfield, Mass.! Just wanted to express my support for Snowzilla! Great to see that he has his own Facebook page. Enjoy the winter, and Merry Christmas
Fred
THE SNOWMAN IS AWESOME, TELL THEM TO LEAVE IT ALONE, TELL YOUR OLD GRUMPY NEIGHBORS AND CITY PEOPLE TO CHEER UP ITS CHRISTMAS, I’M SURE THEY BUILT A SNOWMAN AT ONE TIME IN THERE LIFE
B I think Billy Powers sums it up best himself! “If you can’t have a snowman in Anchorage Alaska, what can you have???!!!
Merry Xmas Steve Cutter
I’ve sent out e-mails and posted a note on facebook about this. Everyone should write to the mayor of Anchorage (Mark Begich) here:

What’s not to love about SnowZilla?
Even adults can appreciate a good ole fashioned snowman.
I have been shoveling snow for days. I hate snow, I hate winter, but I see a snowman and I immediately smile. A snowman brings the kid out in most anyone.
Instead of taking donations to fight legal battles, why not take donations for a good cause such as childhood cancer or something relating to children.
I work for a municipality so I can empathize with the City and your neighbors regarding the condition of your property in general.
Put SnowZilla to good use and a good cause. Take every safety precaution so no one gets hurt. Give back to the community that you and your property torment the remainder of the year.
Merry Christmas.
Robert
If it were just about the snowman, that would be one thing. 13 years and $100,000 in fines? Glad he’s not my neighbour! Sounds like a pain in the ass.
Larry Camp
What a great snowman! Too bad some people cannot feel the “Joy” in the Holiday spirit. Merry Christmas
Robin S.
What a great snowman!! I cannot believe the city has nothing better to do than try to ram their “authority” down peoples throats. And all over a snowman for heavens sake! Will they next try to tell you what kind of car you must drive, or what time is”lights out” in your own home??
Deborah Davis
I love this Snowzilla! We should all do this…
Mr. Powers, thank you for making it a cool holiday with Snowzilla! I sure wish there were more pictures on your site!!
In the meantime, we should all make Snowzilla’s in our communities! And why not? The idea of Snowzilla is just a lighthearted idea to bring some smiles.

Mr. Powers, thank you for making it a cool holiday with Snowzilla! I sure wish there were more pictures on your site!!
Sounds like the crap that goes on here in Tennessee! Let them charge you and let Bush pardon you and Snowzilla!! Maybe Sarah Palin can contact him for you!!!
Elaine
I can’t believe the government is trying to stop a snowman from being built/on display! Don’t they have better things to do??? This snowman makes people happy!! It’s great yard art!!!
Nicole
Man, that thing contains more snow than we have seen in the past 4 years.
Totally cool. Good for you Billy. Keep that space open for Snowzilla each and every year.
Oh, by the way, tell your Mayor that Virginia says “put some cops on duty to keep the traffic flowing and just enjoy”. Some people just need to loosen up and get a grip.
John Mason, Amherst,Va
I think its great to do something that the children would enjoy as well as any adult. I think the people that have a problem with it are mad because they really don’t enjoy there own lives, and no matter how much money they spend they cannot find any joy. I would love to have a picture of this giant snowman. I do not get much snow at all in Oklahoma, but if I did I would do the same thing. Keep it up!!!
Shelley
Hello to all,
Have hearding what your towns’ leaders are doing just because of a giant snowman, makes me wonder why people would want to move there. Most people enjoy the holiday season, after all Holidays aren’t meant to make people snippy. I’m sorry that such a wonderful wintertime figure as a snowman has brought grief to so many in your town. I just wish that they all receive a big dose of holiday spirit and be reminded about what the holiday’s are about. It is snow after all and snow will melt. I wish you can remember all the training everyone received in elementary school, and find a solution that works well for all parties involved. I glad that in this horrible economic time families are still having fun and rememebering to good about the holiday season. As for those that don’t agree, remember elementary school we don’t all have to get alone, we just need to be respectful, and understand that everyone is different.
Mary Thiemann
I think the city should find someone to pick on their own size, Snowzilla would surely crush them all in a cold yet fun inspiring, smile inducing, laughter affiliated, pile of SNOW. I dare you councilmen and women, I DARE YOU!
Mike, Canada
Our family in the Chicago suburbs just viewed your video - fantastic job Billy. Snowzilla is an outstanding snowman. We contributed a little to your defense fund - don’t let the bah humbug city get you blue this holiday season.
Snowzilla lives! It’s magic…LOLOLOLOL!!
Michael Page
Merry Christmas first off!! Come on Americans, can we get over ourselves with the constant ba humbug and that offends me crap over every little thing someone does to have and spread a little joy in the world??!! This whole political correctness thing is getting very old and very depressing, enough already! If you dont like a giant snowman then dont look. If you dont like a Manger display no matter where it is then dont look at it! But, stop limiting other American’s right to have a joyous religious Christmas. From what I have read and seen on Snowzilla the city seems to have been harassing this Powers guy for many years. Snowzilla seems safely made and displayed to me. Rock on brother!
Nick
Gotta agree with Billy, outlawing a snowman in Anchorage??? Ok, so what is the officially sanctioned height I’m allowed to build my snowman?
D. Blue
Legal evidence that Mr. Powers might want to see.
The entire court system in the United States is fraud, which is the major reason that government in the U.S. has become like what he is experiencing in Anchorage. Details are at http://home.absolute.net/xode/nwofraud/Bankruptcy_Fraud/Bankfraud1.htm. He might want to introduce those details into the court record if he goes to court in order to make it publicly clear that he knows that the court is fraud and why, and to get the court on the defensive.
Xode
I LOVE SNOWZILLA!! He is quite handsome!! I support him all the way and I think it is wrong that the Mayor and others are taking part in this discrimination against a friendly snowman!!
I think they are discriminating against him because he’s tall, and because he’s white!! I don’t think we should stand for this!! I think that you are allowed to be host to whatever Snowman comes along and if he decides he wants to stay at your place, it’s your yard and your land, what right do they have to say you can’t!!
I sent a “SAVE SNOWZILLA” email to Governer Palin’s Office, and I would encourage the rest of you to do the same!!
Have a Merry Christmas and Happy New Year and thankyou for being a gracious host and allowing Snowzilla to stay with you!!
Happy Holidays to ALL!!!……Including Snowzilla!!
Tamara Beezley
Boo to Anchorage officials. Go community of Anchorage and Snowzilla!!! ![]()
Krystal
I just want to say I’m on Billy’s side, I thought we lived in a “FREE COUNTRY”. So his snowman is attracting people, it’s the Christmas season let people enjoy themselves. This thing about charging him for having a snowman in his yard is crappy, are they just trying to make money on him? Wish I could afford to donate but can’t hope he wins.
Sheila Gaudet
Your Snowman Rocks…. Everyone should build a snowman in tribute to Snowzilla.
What has happened to our great country, when you can’t make a snowman in your own yard.
When I was a kid you tried your best to make the biggest snowman possible, and you seem to have done just this.
My son got suspended for throwing a snowball in school when he was only seven, and I could not beleive it. This is a winter past time in Canada, have they not seen the Norman Rockwell famous painting of kids behind the snow fort thowing snowballs?
I commend your find work, and I think what your snowzilla needs is a Mrs. Snowzilla on the other side of him.
Go for it man, all true Canadians will support you and your quest for winter fun.
Tell the city to “shovel It”
Snowlover
I CAN’T BELIEVE THE POLITICIANS ARE GOING TO FINE THIS GUY. PEOPLE TRY TO DO SOMETHING UNIQUE AND WONDERFUL AND STUPID LOCAL POLITICIANS WANT TO SHOW THAT THEY CONTROL THINGS.
BILLY YOU ONLY DID ONE THING WRONG, YOU DIDN’T BUILD HIM BIG ENOUGH TO REALLY PISS THOSE PEOPLE AT CITY HALL OFF!!!!!!!!!!
Rick Revelle
Sorry, Billy, my money stays at home. But your city is not unique. If they wanted to stop you (or even get you to join in if you would be inclined to do so), they could get sponsors to build an even bigger snowman on park land. Instead, they play an adversarial game of wasting taxpayers’ money on litigation like this - but their objective is to wear your finances down. Your best recourse in just organizing to get your incumbents out of elected office when they run. Many politicians and political appointees also have long memories and carry a vendetta. Good luck!
Harry Eastman
Oh, come on! A HARMLESS SNOW MAN! Is the mayor a relative of Palin? Sounds like it. grow some of your own snowballs, Mr. Mayor. Stop persecuting Snowzilla!
Karen
Awesome Snowman Billy
Keep up the wonderful work. And don’t back down
June
It’s only a snow man, that’s in his yard, if he wants to build it, doesn’t bother anyone else, and if it does they have issues.
Dylan
What the heck?
I thought it was pretty creative.
What the heck do you do with all that snow in Alaska?
You should get all your non opposing neighbors to build their own snowzilla.
Have a whole block of Snowzillas.
Merry Christmas
Questioning the answers
Against the law? WTF?
Since when was it against the law to build a snowman? On your own property at that? If anything the town should be praising you and helping you make it an attraction.
Where is their Christmas spirit?
I think you should build some more out of spite ![]()
Regards,
Terry
What’s wrong with having a big snowman???
Making a snowman is an ageold and fun tradition.
I think it’s fantastic that snowzilla has been made, and i also believe the officials who think the snowman is affecting the city and causing “disruption in the neighborhoods”….. well, kinda extreme if u ask me… over in Wausau, WI we had some folks create a snowman too, it wasn’t 25 feet, but i think it was along the lines of 15-20 i went over to see it myself and it was cool, i thought it was an awesome use of snow and it’s also better than just sitting around watching t.v. and such.
So kudos to mr. powers.
I look forward to the snowzillas to come.
Josiah Winterhoff
Snowzilla - Revision
Just a refinement - Why spend all that money on litigation? when you can simply get the city to back you by getting permits, a little simple engineering, and a great location to build it, with everyone backing you, the city government, the local businesses who would benefit from it also, and make it a town tradition. I’ll bet it can turn into something wonderful for all.
Ron M.
Power to the Snowman! I absolutely love this. Where else but in America, and Alaska no less, can you build a giant snowman and get told by the authorities that it is a hazard and to tear it down. Come on Mr Mayor, give your head a shake, and a Bah Humbug to you and yours!
Jacquie (down in snowy Vancouver Canada)
Bah Humbug
Perhaps your up-tight neighbors would thaw out a little by selling hot chocolate to the passers by! I see a huge commercial opportunity missed here! Everyone simply needs to lighten up a little.
Good job!
Long live Snowzilla!!
Geoff Goldburg
Make it Bigger
Looks really Dangerous! ahahhah just kidding.
Do they limit the size of sand castles in Florida, too?
Palin should step in and say some stupid things…
hahahahahha so much for liberty
Carson Warrener
If the city is having such a hard time dealing w/the traffic flow in this neighborhood, why couldn’t Snowzilla mysteriously appear in a nearby park??
Then, it seems to me, everybody would be happy.
Perhaps there could be a whole family of Snowzillas….
Ellie
So cool it burns!
Way to go!!! I’m impressed and love the moxie!
It’s like burning man of the north. I love it
Chris Vadman
Pardon Snowzilla
Santa Claus and Frosty vote to give Snowzilla a full pardon! The world needs more things that make one smile. Come on, City, figure out a better way to resolve this. Our family is sending waves to Snowzilla from Alabama.
Sara
Snowzilla - Engineering
Hi, I think what you’ve done the past few years has been amazing!
I believe that your spirit and love of tradition is very robust.
However, I think it would be a great idea to find an alternate place that is safer, can accommodate traffic, and maybe even engineer a re-bar cage the the proper dimensions to hold the packed snow together to make it safer, where people can go up to it for photos without the potential of the “solid ice” as you say falling on them.
I’ll bet the donations would more than cover such a venture for many years to come, and be allot cheaper than fighting the government, and will make many more happier too. Just my thoughts.
Take Care, and good luck.
Ron M.
Sign of Ill times
Dear Mayor,
It has recently come to my attention that there is a conflict between you and a citizen of your town regarding the construction of a snowman. After reading this article, I must admit that I am a bit disturbed. I can’t help but wonder if this is a taste of what we can expect when our ill-chosen President Elect comes into power. If you are going to somehow legislate against as prominent a symbol of the Christmas season as a snowman then do people who’s light displays are too garish pose a risk too? Is a person’s Christmas spirit then supposed to be based upon the accessibility of their neighborhood? Are we paving the way to government regulated and structured holiday displays? I know that takes the situation to the extreme, but as I said, I am shocked that a man with seven children makes national media, portrayed negatively, for going through the effort to tear his children away from all the mind numbing, imagination deadening, energy Stealing devices they are exposed to daily (i.e. game consoles, television, etc.) to build a giant snowman. I personally think he should be lauded both as an example of true Christmas spirit and as a caring father. I know it is a difficult position you are placed in and can only hope that you will make the correct decision regarding both this individual and the principals our country is founded upon.
I have copied this email to Mr. Powers, the Boards and Commissions of Alaska (hoping they will bring it to the attention of Governor Palin) and Fox News.
I would also like to add, in case this email makes it to Governor Palin, that I found the smear campaign directed against her and her family by the buld of the media in America vile and despicable and her composure was commendable, I hope she runs for President in 2012, she will definitely receive my vote!
Merry Christmas Mayor!
Charles Steffens, American Citizen and Defender of Christmas Spirit
Snowzilla an Alaska Native?
I know he’s a white dude and all, but isn’t Snowzilla a native Alaskan? Can’t he get some protection on that basis?
Seth
Hey if you really want to talk to the man in charge just called the Mayors office.
The number is 907-343-7100. If you call on your cell its just another call. I called twice an its funny he wasnt there either time. Go figure .An yes this this the number for mayors office.
Ron Brandriet
We have had “In God We Trust” taken off of our money! What next have all snowmen taken off our Christmas Cards?
Mike Rusinko
Sounds like you have a bunch of selfish yuppie scum who are just plain jealous they did not think of this. Best impeach the city council before they impose a BWM in every drive way ordinance.
However, if he fell over and injured someone you could loose everything. Is there a park nearby were one could be erected so it could be roped off?
Joe
Letter Sent to the Major of Anchorage
Having visited Anchorage in the past I would think you would use this “Snowzilla” to Promote your city and State both. Lord knows the “Abominable Show-woman Gov Palin” did a horrendous job of representing Alaska, do you have to follow suit?
Instead of outlawing it, promote it.
Truck in snow from around the area….Encourage physical excercise to combat both Adult and childhood Obesity, encourage contests; give credit for the inspiration to Mr. Powers; have him be the Master of Ceremonies for an annual city wide contest; Make this a event to bring in the winter tourists which are far fewer than the summer boatloads; For a small investment of funds and a large investment of ingenuity and creativity this could be the biggest cultural activity of your community. Use the head you were given to turn what is surely to be the worst financial year for your city into a money making enterprise to help all your citizens enjoy life in these very lean times….and also help prevent your city from haveing budget shortfalls.
Most Sincerely,
Mr. Paul J. Weikel, KC, Missouri
Snowzilla Rocks The Block!!
Snowzilla is Bad Ass!! Build him even larger and add a lighted finger flipping your Communist Mayor & the other Jack Booted Losers at your City Council off. Those low-life crumb bums need to keelhauled on a fishing boat, wrapped in anchor chain and dropped into the frigid Bering Sea, All Hail The Mighty Snowzilla!!
Jon Bender, Dallas, TX
I would far rather see a Snowzilla in someone’s yard than half the stuff I have been seeing over the past few years when some less than desirable elements moved onto the block. Snowzilla or broken down cars, falling apart houses and such that are blatantly against county codes but the homeowners and/or landlords ignore the county cries to clean up.
At least when it gets warm (even in Alaska) for Snowzilla to melt. We have to wait for the legal process to target local eyesores and go through hoops to get the properties cleaned up.
Hope to see the monster snowman next year!
Karen
From Sugar Land, Texas…where we rarely get snow… I commend you on the miracle of Snowzilla’s reappearance.. perfect example of simple civil disobedience…
Petition the Gov… maybe you can get a pardon!
Angela Hayes
What a great symbol of holiday spirit. I can’t believe the city has a problem with a snowzilla!! There must not be a lot of crime there if they’re wasting people’s time and money over a snowman! Keep it up Mr. Powers, you are in the right and don’t let the powers to be (no pun intended)tell you otherwise! Merry Christmas ![]()
Steve
The city definetly need to lay off of you. Christmas AND winter only comes once a year. It’s in your yard, Im thinking. And Kids love it. There are houses in ANC that attract attention to where people pass by and i’m sure take pictures of that are full of Christmas decorations. Come on people it only comes once a year, just LIVE A LITTLE!
Samantha
I think that with the way the world is at this point in time, that snowzilla is a bright spot to people of all ages. It gives people something to smile about
Long live snowzilla!!!
Amy Schultz
I’m sorry at this time I’m not able to donate money in support of Snowzilla. I’m a single mother of five going through the world’s longest divorce from a father unwilling to pay support! HOWEVER I support Snowzilla in my heart and I think this is ridiculous that they tell you, you can not make him anymore.
I tell you Snowzilla needs a family! I think you should give him a wife and kids!
LOL
Don’t ever stop building him!
your friend in Tennessee
Penny
I think its great, keep up with it….. I may try the same in my yard!
Rich
Snowmen of the World Unite!!!
I agree. If you cannot build a giant snowman in Anchorage then where can you build one? To be honest, I was expecting a MUCH larger snowman. I tend to be unusually and almost pathologically cautious, and a 25 foot high raises zero red-flags for me. Nuisance? Hardly. Hazard? Nope. High mirth potential? Definitely.
OK, now, if it were 50+ feet tall then there MIGHT be a safety issue depending upon actual construction, but this snowman is less than 25 feet tall with a wide base. Anchorage officials, I recommend that you file this item under “Non-Issue” and move along.
Cai Black
Bah! Humbug!
~sigh~ It seems that especially this time of year one should be able to show a bit more love, compassion and tolerance. The snowman is beautiful! Just looking at him made me smile.
No more bah humbugs! The City government needs to get over it, I think.
Let things be with the Big Guy. He is an ambassador of what the Holy Day is about…making people feel better and perhaps be a little kinder.
Blessings to the Mysterious Builder of the Great Snowman of Alaska!
Ro Elliott
I deplore the actions of the city in attempting to censor this artistic expression by whoever built the most recent edifice. This shows that small minds have small agendas and do not appreciate the enthusiasm by many.
As a graduate (last century) of the University of Alaska I appreciate the independent spirit exhibited by citizens of what is now (not then) a State, and such should not be curtailed.
(just for the record in case more is made of my comments that are intended: though I admired Governor Palin’s spunk, I did not vote for her.)
Joe Cain
I think Snowzilla is awesome! Just how big is he going to get? Has he reached puberty yet? He’s gone through a pretty big growth spurt in the past 12 months.
Please post more pictures of Snowzilla. Perhaps, the town council there will get into the spirit of Christmas or will have some “Christmas spirit” and want to have their pics taken with the big fella. Keep on Keepin’ on!
Gale
Don’t let them win.
it’s nice to see people standing up for freedom even if it’s in small fun way’s . don’t let them win
John
To the City of Anchorage, you should be ashamed of your behaviour. Where is your Christmas Spirit, It’s only for a little while. Oh, and your giving him fine’s over what…His snowman, my god!!…. you seriously need something else to do with your time. That is the most ridiculous thing I ever heard. The City and it’s so called officials are just making themselves look like idiots!!!! To the City, Maybe you could ask Billy Powers to compromise by letting them put the snowman up between the 22nd to the 2nd of Jan. Then it’s only a so called hazzard for what 12days. My goddness what is our world coming to when they put these people in power???? To Billy or whom ever is building the snowman, keep building, maybe you should put one right on the town councils front step!
Kim Hallmark
Must have been some magic in that old felt hat they found…keep snowzilla alive!!!! We love him here in Missouri!
Lisa
Invite the scrooges over to show em just how safe Snowzilla is and then accidentally knock him over on em…Merry Christmas…
Jim Kelley
How ridiculous can neighbors be? My neighbor called the game warden over my little rat terrior being in their yard just a few times he’s usually an inside dog we just let him out to play (I live in the country with no leash laws). But yet, when my other neighbor’s HUGE Great Pyrenees goes over and uses their yard as a litter box and then finds trash to drag on their yard they’re all nice and friendly with that neighbor. Makes me so mad because we have never done anything to make them despite us so much. Oh and btw… after the Game Warden showed up, he said that he couldn’t do anything about it because we had done nothing wrong. So then my rat terrior goes missing a week after that (I think they killed him or took him off
).
Snowzilla is awsome! If I had that much snow in my yard dont think I wouldn’t try to make one like him, but make it moon my other neighbors or something lol.
Talena
I love the snowman!! What a beautiful creation!
From your friends in Calgary, Alberta, Canada…keep up the great work!
Sarah
ALL HAIL SNOWZILLA! TO THE POWERS FAMILY AND WHOMEVER CREATED SNOWZILLA…HAVE A VERY MERRY CHRISTMAS. Just be careful when he does start to melt.
TO THE CITY OFFICIALS…BAH-HUMBUG!
Wendy
Go Billy,
Thanks for giving us something to smile about this Christmas. All we hear in the news is about corupt politicians, bad economy, mis-managed bail outs…..and Anchorage wants to prosecute a SNOWMAN??? Get real, city council!!! Long live Snowzilla……or at least until May.
Thanks and Merry Christmas

This is so stupid!!!!!! What the heck is happening in America?????????
